What does the W7 blue dot network tray icon mean?

    Hi,

All of a sudden my W7 Pro 32 bit network icon changed to a blue dot network icon. What does the blue dot mean? And what do I need to do to fix it?

    cheers,

It means it is still finding out what your full network config is.

    Thanks,

Sorry for your trouble as that was the only time I've see that in 20+ yr of Internet use & imagine that BIG blue dot just staring at me, dork me for not knowing! http://windowssecrets.com/forums/ima...lies/wacko.gif http://windowssecrets.com/forums/images/icons/icon8.png

This pc has been finding out what "it's full network config is" for over a year. Could there be a problem with my NetGear wireless router connected to a Cisco DP3208 router, both of which are about 4 mo old w/no problems. I have a 60 mb cable connection.

    cheers,

It's unusual that it stays like that for long. It usually happens on boot, but once boot finishes, it goes away. If it persists, that means something may be wrong with some part of your networking hardware in the computer where that is shown.

Have you checked if you have all the latest drivers for the networking hardware in that computer?

    ruirib,

Boy are you quick & thorough. The blue dot goues away, and the modem & router were installed by the cable co. 3 mo ago. Im also seeing a small cream colored rectangular
"Network 4 Internet Access" inside the pop up.

It's not stopping me from using my PC, so I'll keep my eye on it now that you told me what it is & how to check/correct it.

    cheers,

As long as everything works and the blue circle goes away after boot, there is no need for you to worry about it.

I've had the blue dot show a few times but the network and internet both work. Nothing showing in the event log so I suspect some timeout thing.

    Joe,

Thanks for the quick reply, that seems to be my situation. In several decades of Windows web use blue dot never occured.

This "revolving circle" thing first showed up with Vista and is present with 7 too. I think I haven't yet seen on 8.
