Word 2000 graphics display as X (Word 2002)

I've created a lot of documents in Word 2000 that include cropped pasted screenprints of things like Word toolbar buttons, dialog boxes, etc. When I open these documents in Word 2002, the graphics sometimes appear as boxes with red X's. I checked Microsoft Support and they say this problem can occur if the original document was created in a version of Word earlier than 97 (which isn't the case) AND contains pasted pictures. They also suggest a lack of hard drive space, which isn't my problem. Their only solution is to save the document as a new one and re-create all the graphics. This is going to take a heck of a lot of time. I'm wondering if anyone has another suggestion.

    Are the graphics linked?
If so are they in the same folder as the original file?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No, they're not linked. I inserted them with Paste, Special, as "device independent bitmaps".
