Almost every time I start my 9 (Office Update Freezes PC)

Almost every time I start my 98 SE machine, the Office Update Optimizer starts and locks up the machine. Then, I have to push the reset button to restart. I've tried unchecking the box in the update window, but that doesn't help. I also cannot cancel it while it's running. I'm running Office 2000, patched with SR-1. Is there a registry hack or some other way to premamently disable this? Thanks!
