Repeating Posts in Daily Archives

I get a few different boards in daily archive mode, and I have noticed something going recently that tends to make the digests longer: I often see messages repeat in the digests from day to day. Usually, I only see them twice on consecutive days, but I think there have been a few that I read three times. And I don't think I get every message twice.

Very strange. Or is it? I don't know why "daily" archives would contain messages from multiple days.

Is it possible that the repeated posts have been edited? That would change the date stamp and put it into a new day's folder.

I've noticed this as well - sometimes more than twice! And since one in particular I've noticed was only one line I'm fairly certain it wasn't edited.

Also I sometimes get the archive more than once a day, and the second one won't be the same as the first, although it will have a lot of it repeated.

I also am curious to know why this should be happening?

Out of curiosity I just checked my scuttlebutt archive, and the first post listed in each of the following three archives is the same one - #99079!

Hi Andy:

Could you post an example of the duplicated archives, with the repeated messages. The messages should not repeat.

Edited messages are not re-included in the archives. Only the original version of the message is sent.

Well, maybe Beryl could post hers, since she seems to have kept her copies. I usually delete them after reading them, and after tomorrow morning, I won't be back in the office until after New Year's. The best I could do until then would be to see if tomorrow's Scuttlebutt archive had any messages the same as today's.

If it is just scuttlebut that is causing the problem, then I will add it to my daily archives and keep a watch over the next week.

If the problem re-occurs then I can do something about it.

It's not just Scuttlebutt, it's just that the Scuttlebutt archive is the only one I happened to receive today, so it would be the only one I would be able to compare to tomorrow.

But Scuttlebutt is a good one to watch, since it gets so many messages that there is an archive pretty much every day.

Thanks for checking into this. It's more of an annoyance than a major problem, but here at work we have limits on how large our mail files are allowed to grow, so anything that cuts down the size of incoming mail is appreciated.

Fair enough - but the post mentioned above as being in three archives of scuttlebutt (it was #99079) definitely wasn't edited - it was only half a dozen words!

I have managed to get copies of the archives from Leif and can see the problem.

First cut shows one or more of the last posts in a digest being repeated in the next digest.

If that's the problem, perhaps that's by design?

It will make sure, that if there's a slow down or whatever, that posts get out in the digest no matter what? (ie, maybe posts in a half hour period get posted on both days' archives?)

What sort of time lap- can anybody see?

Only trouble with that idea is that, of the three digests I mentioned above, the repeated post was the first post in all three ...?

It is being looked at.

Archive processing can get a bit convoluted.
