    Announcing EMET 5.0

Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) 5.0. As many of you already know, EMET is a free tool, designed to help customers with their defense in depth strategies against cyberattacks, by helping detect and block exploitation techniques that are commonly used to exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities. EMET 5.0 further helps to protect with two new mitigations and several other improvements. You can download EMET 5.0 from the Microsoft Download Center.

    Bruce,

Thanks for the link! I've uninstalled MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit and installed EMET 5.0 and selected the Recommended Settings. I'll report back here any problems I run into.

    Hey Y'all,

Ok I've been running EMET 5.0 on the default settings for 5 days now w/o a single problem. This includes yesterday when I was PowerShelling using it to control other computers on my home network (very neat by the way). HTH

If you don't mind my asking . . . why do you favor EMET over M_Bytes Anti-Exploit?

    Dick,

I really don't. I was just using the Free version of M_Bytes Anti-Exploit and it didn't provide any options. So I thought I'd give EMET a shot before plunking down some of my limited retirement income for the paid version. Of course I probably don't really need either as I've never had a malware episode due to good security practices but you never know!

    Hey Y'all,

    Another update.

I've moved EMET up to a higher level of protection by changing the settings for Data Execution Protection (DEP) & Structured Exception Handler Overwrite Protection (SEHOP) from Application Opt-in to Always ON.

All apps tested so far continue to work:
    • FireFox 31 w/ABP, NoScript, Grease Monkey, WOT, Disconnect, HTTPS Everywhere & Privacy Badger
    • Office 2010, Including VBA
    • MS Money Sunset Editioin
    • PowerShell including PS Remoting
    • Calibre 64-Bit Vers: 1.47

I'll keep providing updates as I test other apps. HTH

Was unable to install EMET, got an error message that "administrator would not allow install". How can I fix this?

Install it as the administrator (from an account with administrative privileges).

    Retired Geek,

What settings did you use for Internet Explorer? Has it continued to work properly? Did you uninstall previous versions of EMET or modify your registry? If so, how?

Could you be persuaded to write a column for WS summarizing the installation of EMET 5--a lot of people have posted problems online? Please orient it for the majority of readers who have a small number of computers and/or small networks.

    Thanks.

    Charles

    PS
I'm thinking of starting up a group for descendants
of men who served under Stonewall Jackson. We
won't quibble with you if your ancestors served
    under lesser commanders.

    Charles,

    I didn't do anything special.
First I didn't have a previous version of EMET installed (if I had I would have uninstalled it first using Revo Uninstaller Pro, as they say it's just how I roll!)
I just downloaded from MS and ran the install.
I started out using the Recommended Settings for 6 days to see if I would encounter any problems, which I did NOT!
I then moved up to the Maximum Security Settings (see previous post) which I have been using for 38 days now again w/o a single problem with any of my apps.
I also have NOT touched the Registry in conjunction with EMET.

FYI: My main system security settings are:
    1. Windows Defender (OS Win 8.1 Update 1)
    2. Malwarebytes Premium (Paid, Active Scanning ON)
    3. Windows Firewall
    4. Cisco Linksys EA4300 Router Hardware Firewall with SPI.

I don't use IE except where a site won't behave in FireFox

    In Firefox I use:
    1. NoScript
    2. AdBlock Plus
    3. Flash Block
    4. WOT
    5. Disconnect

    HTH
