    By Kathleen Atkins
If you've not seen before now a persuasive demonstration of the virtue of scientific principle applied to conventional life, this video is for you. In 1906, Francis Galton, the distinguished English scientist, proposed an alternative to the standard wedge method of slicing round cakes.

Looks like the "correct" method exposes twice as much of the cake to air. Pushing the halves together and rubber banding them seems unlikely to work very often.

Keeping the cake in a plastic bag or a well-sealed container will stop it drying out.

Cutting it in wedges gives an equal amount of icing for each piece.

I was not impressed with the mess left at the end - a waste!

It's a very unpalatable icing that would withstand that much handling and binding with rubber bands.
