Can anyone recommend a portable router--or whatever the correct device may be?

I would like to be able to go into an open Wi-Fi environment (Starbucks, cruise ship, etc.) and use a portable router (or whatever the correct term might be) to establish secure connections wirelessly.

I have seen a number of portable routers that are available, but they seem to require an Ethernet input. I've read the product descriptions but I can't tell if these same devices will also allow the input to be from Wi-Fi.

Can anyone clarify for me what it is that I need?

    Thanks,

    Don

You use a VPN for secure access at public WiFi spots. There are free or paid ones and you get what you pay for - I don't have a list to hand.
The alternative is a subscription to mobile WiFi where the phone company provides you with a portable router that only you can access - or anyone you allow.

    cheers, Paul

This thread has more than enough bad news to scare you away from public hotspots, and some recommendations.

    cheers, Paul

And in a piece of great timing, a VPN thread.

    cheers, Paul
