    Programs that automatically startup

Using Win2000 Professional, is there a way to modify the order in which programs that automatically start run? I am having a conflict with Adaptec CD software and McAfee VirusScan. It appears that perhaps if I can get McAfee to start after the Adaptec I might be okay.

But, I don't know where to go to modify the order that these and other programs startup. And as a matter of fact, they do not show up in the Startup folder or in win.ini under load or run, so I don't know where they are even told to startup - I'm guessing somewhere in the registry.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

THey do load from the registry if they are not in the startup folder on your programs menu. Unfortunately, they may load as services - McAfee does for certain - and you cannot change the load order in any easy fashion.

If there is a way to do so with services, I don't know. In the startup group you can rename the shortcuts with numbers:

    01 - program
    02 - program
    03 - program

In the registry it's quite a bit different. The app or service is specified by path and file name and can be given startup parameters.

You might do well to consult with Adaptec and/or Network Associates to see if there is anything they can suggest that is product specific.

    Good luck!!

you can iuse a utility or just a WSH script to control load order from start menu. you could remove the ones from the registry and load them from WSH but it mess up the run as service on win2k. do either run as services or do they just load from the registry?

In Windows 98 there is an excellent program named msconfig.exe that exposes ALL the stuff that loads at Windows startup, include the Win.ini, System.ini,
    Startup group, and various services.

Is there anything similar in Windows 2000? I have looked for similar functionality, but not found it yet.

    Yse, it is called "msconfig.exe", works the same way as in Windows 98. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Nothing called msconfig*.* on my W2K installation.. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

If you can point me to a shortcut that mimics:

Start | Programs |Administrative Tools | Computer Management
    Then
System Information | Software Environment | Startup Programs

I'd be (almost) forever in your debt.

I searched for msc*.* on my Windows 2000 Professional box, but did not find msconfig.exe. I also checked out installing various components under Windows 2000, but no success.

    Naughty, David. <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>. Would you by any chance be running a dual-boot system?

MSConfig.exe is not bundled with Win 2000 Pro SP1, but if you have Win 98SE, and hence MSConfig on your drive, running it will work. OK, there are one or two error messages to get through (just ignore them) and eventually you get to a sheet from which you can access the starting programs.
