Win8.1 Update: Much ado about (almost) nothing

    PATCH WATCH

Win8.1 Update: Much ado about (almost) nothing

    By Susan Bradley

August's Patch Tuesday is notable more for the updates we didn't get, than for those we did. It was rumored that this Patch Tuesday would see the release of another big update for Windows 8.1 — the so called Update 2. It never happened.

The full text of this column is posted at windowssecrets.com/patch-watch/win8-1-update-much-ado-about-almost-nothing/ (opens in a new window/tab).

Columnists typically cannot reply to comments here, but do incorporate the best tips into future columns.

    One Update - Two Names?

So grateful for this column -- Ms. Bradley's advice is always clear and informative.

I was a little confused by this week's paragraph concerning OneNote. Ms. Bradley's column links MS14-048 to KB 2977201 (as it is displayed on MS's Technet website at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...urity/MS14-048) - but the update listed in my own computer's Windows Update, which links to MS's Support website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596857), is KB 2596857 (which is strange in itself, given that the numbering seems way out of sequence). Is this unusual? I.e., that MS would give an update not only two different numbers, but publish them on two different websites?

Microsoft's KB numbering system is a complete mess for everyone, isn't it? But it's not unusual for there to be multiple articles describing the same issue.

The number of the actual update is confirmed in MS14-048: Security update file names For Microsoft OneNote 2007: onenote2007-kb2596857-fullfile-x86-glb.exe

But I'm surprised anyone would still be using OneNote 2007 when OneNote 2013 has been a free download for five months.

Thanks, Bruce -- I wasn't aware that it was a free download. But when I checked your link, I noticed that it's only free for Mac and iTunes users - of which I am not one. Oh, well.

Windows 7/8 (and Windows Phone 7/8) too: Get OneNote 2013 on your PC for Free *

(* for notebooks saved to OneDrive, not locally; I wasn't previously aware of that restriction)

I tried One Note 2013 and found its geared towards cloud usage with One Drive. I prefer to keep things local so I went back to One Note 2007.

August patch Tuesday fixes recalled by Microsoft:

    http://hothardware.com/News/Windows-...-Back/#!bFveQp

    From the web page:

The updates that should be uninstalled are:

    • 2982791 MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 12, 2014
    • 2970228 Update to support the new currency symbol for the Russian ruble in Windows
    • 2975719 August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2
    • 2975331 August 2014 update rollup for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012

I have not experienced BSOD from these but at this point I don't use Win8.1 productively (still relay on a Win7 SP1 system).

    Security Bulletin MS14-045 rereleased

    Hi Folks,

Mine is already in from WU. I have immediately HIDDEN IT!!! per Susan's recommendations on MS Community Forums.

    Security Bulletin MS14-045 rereleased

MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 27, 2014 (2993651)

Known issues with this security update

    Known issue 1
After you install this security update, fonts that are installed in a location other than the default fonts directory (%windir%\fonts\) cannot be changed when they are loaded into any active session. Attempts to change, replace, or delete these fonts are blocked, and a "File in use" message is displayed.

    Known issue 2
After you install this update, the z-order of the windows is changed. (The z-order calls the SetWindowPos function together with the HWND_TOP parameter.) Therefore, the windows of certain applications may become invisible or may be incorrectly displayed behind other windows.

    Status
We are currently working on a resolution for this issue.

    Notes
This issue also occurs after you install the following updates:
    2965768
    2970228
    2973201
    2975719

Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2984615)

MS14-045: Vulnerabilities in kernel-mode drivers could allow elevation of privilege: August 12, 2014: KB 2984615

    Hope this helps,
