    Excel Changed?

    Hey Y'all,

I just noticed something changed in Excel 2010.

I have several workbooks that create a menu in the old Excel 2003 mode.
These should show up in the Add-ins Tab which I have modified to be the first tab (after File).
All of the sudden today the Add-ins tab no longer displays!
Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

    Update,

I restored (via Macrium Reflect Image ) to 8/16/14 and problem fixed.
Now I'll have to explore Windows Updates and see which one broke it!

    It's Baaaaaaaaaack!

Everyting was running fine after the Image restore yesterday.
    This morning no menus again!
The only update installed was Windows Defender (Win 8.1.1. Pro) updates.

    Can Defender be the culprit?

    Rui,

Doesn't look like it. I just restored again back to the 16th. Then checked and the Add-ins tab was there.
Then I went to Windows Update and the only offered update was for Defender.
I updated and rebooted. Tab still there.

I'm going to monitor the situation very closely, e.g. check the spreadsheets after any change to the system. I've turned Automatic Updates completely off, they had been at notify now it's at Never Check.

    FYI: ExcelVersion.JPG

    Will keep y'all posted.

    Here's the latest update.

Things have been working now for 2 days (at least over night). I've updated Windows Defender twice so that has been eliminated as a cause.

I was starting to suspect Macrium Reflect as each time I restored then updated some settings like dual monitor preferences via Catalyst Control Center I would take a new image and shortly thereafter Excel would break again.

This morning I again decided to take an Image, however, when I started Macrium Reflect it offered an update which I accepted, did the backup and so far things are working fine. So if it was Macrium causing the problem they've fixed it would seem. Please note I took this image with Windows running! My next step will be to recreate my PE Boot Media and try to create an Image with Windows offline (my usual mode).

One other possible suspect is a Flash Player update which I haven't retried yet.

Well this gets stranger and stranger!

Excel has survived a Image backup from Win PE Boot media and the uninstall of Adobe Air & Flash Player and the Re-installation of the latest version of Flash Player via Revo Uninstaller Pro.

The only thing I can think of that I did differently before was that I updated Flash Player via Secunia PSI.

Oh well, I guess I should be happy that everything is now working properly, for the time being at least, but I hate not knowing what caused the problem and a strange problem at that!

    It's baaaack!

Well I installed KB2993651 yesterday and all seemed OK. That was of course until I booted this morning and my Ad-ins tab was once again missing from all of my Excel workbooks. Thankfully, I imaged the C: drive with Macrium Reflect before installing the patch and a 10 minute restore fixed the problem. Looks like strike 2 for MS on this one.

    Hey Y'all,

I think I've finally got this one figured out.
It seems that the Excel.xlb file was becoming corrupted.
I'll attribute this to bad coding, specifically not cleaning up upon exiting of the workbooks containing custom menus.
Somehow the file also seems to have been corrupted by the installation of the referenced Windows Update.
I found this out by deleting the Excel.xlb file, which will automatically regenerate, and seeing that this solved the problem.

I then went a googling and found this which adds more evidence that the Excel.xlb file is the problem.

Your Quick Access Toolbar settings are stored in:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office \Excel.qat

Legacy toolbar settings are stored in:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Exce l\Excel14.xlb

    Personal macros are stored in:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Exce l\XLStart\Personal.xlsb

Remember, AppData is a hidden folder so you need to display hidden files and folders in order to see it.

Most options, however, are stored in the registry, in:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\E xcel
I've modified my code in the affected files to cleanup on the way out and even added Exit w/o saving options since it was using the Big Red X to exit w/o saving that seems to have caused the problem.

I hope this is the end of this saga and that my experience is useful to those of you reading this.
