    Question Start page changed

My start page shows only 5 items: One Drive, Photos, IE, Desktop, and HP Support Assistant{which doesn't work). The page changed within the last few days. Previously there were several different icons. Restore does not work and I can't figure out where to get the page back to original. I've looked through msconfig not seeing what might help.

Do you mean the Windows start screen?

Are you running Windows 8 or 8.1?

Have you tried a System Restore back to a time when it was OK?

Win 8.1. Yes, the Start Screen. I tried to run restore to 3 different dates and it did not restore. I could try recover but I don't want to reinstall all the programs that would be removed.

Does the all programs view (i.e. the small down arrow) of the start screen still work?

Yes. The icons for the card games, the windows store, weather, tutorial etc. are absent.

Not sure if this will help but see How To Reset Windows 8.1 Start Screen To Its Default. If this works at least you'll have a good starting point.

I tried the instructions several times but it comes back "cannot find my folder 'appsfolder.itemdata-ms' ". However I see it in my user files. I also see the .bak file. This is confusing.

Are you sure you are using an elevated command prompt?

Are the files in the location specified in the article?

I finally got a restore to work by using a back up file. All the files are now in the apps window but the the start screen is not the same as before. I can live with this. Thanks much for your assistance. And yes I was in an elevated command prompt.

Personally, I use the Applications to access things/everything. I will, however, suggest this... if you want things to show on the Start screen (or reshow), > Applications screen, Rt Clk on whatever item & tell it to Pin to Start.

    Cheers,
