Icons are missing from the desktop on a reboot

    Hello,
I mentioned in another thread that I just placed that am setting up a new computer (a Toshiba X70 laptop).
I have a problem whereas on boot - or reboot - the only icons that show are the ones that come from Windows - i.e. computer, recycle bin, etc.
All of the shortcuts to programs, etc. that I have created on the desktop are gone - their names show, but nothing else.
If I run a "rebuild icons cache" batch file that downloaded, the icons all reappear.
Is anyone intimate with this behavior?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Regards,
    Bob

Or the easiest solution would be to add the "Rebuild icon cache" batch file to your Startup folder, so that it always runs on boot.

Sudo15, Thank you - Iwent through all of the steps in Microsoft's list but no joy . . .
KritzX - that is EXACTLY what I did and, yes, it works fine but . . . I should not have to do that . . .but who knows why?
    Thanks to all!

Yeah Rob, you're right. You shouldn't have to do that. Let's hope someone here can offer a solution. If not, short of a reinstall or running SFC, I guess your best bet would be to add the batch file to your Start -> All Programs -> Startup folder, like I said before.

Have you tried Run maintenance tasks under Control Panel/Find and fix problems - click the Advanced button and Run as administrator and Advanced again for auto repair.

Or a restore point to when they were working ?

Do the icons disappear when you boot up into Safe Mode with Networking or in a clean boot ?

    Sudo15 - thanks!
I ran maintenance/repair and no problems were found.
BUT - Yes, in Safe Mode, the icons are there!
Something that is running (obviously) is preventing them from showing . . .
Again, thanks - something to work with.
    MSConfig, here I come . . .!
