Missing fonts (MS-Office 2K/XP)

I have both Office 2K Pro and Office XP Pro installed on the same Dell laptop and suddenly both versions have lost all their fonts. The only clue I have is that I had a printer driver install abort between a good run of Word 2002 and a bad run of Word 2002. Everything is displayed in Courier font, and the font list shows only Roman 10pt. The Windows/Fonts folder still has lots of fonts available. Any ideas on how to get Office to find the fonts again?

Just another example that Office 2000 and Office XP couldn't be installed on the same machine.
If you need both versions of Office running, I strongly recommend re-format your hard drive and install dual-booting.

What is your default printer showing as in your Office apps?
I have an idea Word will prevent you from using TT fonts if you are not capable of printing them - or am I thinking of something else?

Leif, you are correct, any printer that will not support TTfonts will produce this problem.

You may be right. When the printer install failed, it left a partially installed printer in the Printers folder. I deleted it, and the default printer reverted to a Generic/Text printer. I don't have the laptop with me at the moment, but will check it this evening. Thanks!

Yes, that is your problem, You can install any printer you want and one does not need to be attached to the laptop. The Generic/Text printer does not support TTFonts.

Re: Missing fonts (MS-Office 2K/XP)

Leif and DaveA,

You hit the nail on the head. I have a "virtual" postscript printer and a "virtual" generic/text printer both installed on the laptop, but both of them are pointed at a file since a real printer doesn't exist. When I made the postscript printer the default, all the fonts reappeared! Thanks for your help. I wasn't looking forward to reinstalling anything, much less two copies of Office. And even though Office 2K and XP are known to have some problems running together, I haven't run into any serious inconveniences - yet.

Thanks again.

Glad you got it sorted.
I could never quite fully understand the logic behind limiting usable fonts to whatever your printer was - it doesn't stop you using colour without a colour printer ...

The reasoning is WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get).

Word tries to format the display to reflect the capabilities of the target printer. The "lost" fonts are a consequence.

Just my point - if I see red text on my screen, do I get red text out of my monochrome HP2100?

Hey, I never said Microsoft was consistent.

Someplace between a bug and a feature.

They are consistent with their inconsistencies, though
