Word 2003... double-click file name in Windows Explorer no longer opens file in Word

For years, I've been using Windows Explorer to browse to a directory then double-clicking on a Word document file to open the file in Word 2003. All of a sudden, it no longer works. It launches Word but doesn't open the file.

    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
    Word 2003 (11.8409.8405) SP3

I also have Office 2010 installed and suspect it's one of those situations where the installation of Office 2010 has changed the way Office 2003 works but it didn't start doing this immediately after having installed Office 2010. It just started doing it within the last couple months. I try to avoid using Office 2010 because I really dislike the ribbon interface.

Thanks for the suggestion; file associations were already correct. I did verify it but I was already sure of that because Windows launches Word 2003... it just launches the program but doesn't open the file that I double-clicked.

What happens if Word is already open?

I've heard of Add-Ins causing this but no particular one comes to mind.

Word launches a new window but does not open the double-clicked file.

I am also experiencing this behavior. Double click will open the program, but not the file. If I try to open the file from the program, it works. This is with both Word and Excel.

Sounds like an addin problem. I seem to remember this problem with a bluetooth addin that somehow got installed.

Try opening Word in Safe Mode (holding down Ctrl key) and see if it works in that situation.

I would have suggested this but assumed (erroneously) that with Word open in Safe mode double-clicking on a file would open a new (non-safe mode) instance of Word. I was mistaken.
