Remote Desktop Locations not seeing anything but desktop

I trying to use my Surface Pro 3 (Win8.1) to make a remote connection to my desktop running Win7.
I've allowed remote connections, but the "From this location:" only shows my desktop.
Clicking "Locations" only shows the desktop. How do I get the desktop to see the SP3?
I have the same username/password on both systems.
Both systems see each other in the network and can share Music/Photos/Videos.
I've enabled and started every networking service on the desktop that even seems possibly associated.
Trying to establish a remote connection from the SP3 fails (obviously).
    Thank you.

Are you entering the credentials for the remote desktop into Remote Desktop Connection utility? You also need to be sure TCP port 3389 is not blocked by a firewall.

Try third party software, TeamViewer if you can't get Remote Desktop to work.

Thank you. Your response got me checking everything again, I had failed to identify the desktop user that I wanted to access. I thought that selection was the "allowed user", not the desktop user. Fixed that and all works as expected.
