    Kb2984006

When I checked for the September Microsoft updates I was offered KB2984006 "to fix issues in Windows". I chose to install it but it failed to install 4 times, with error code 80073712. After that, for other reasons I restored Win 7 from a Macrium Reflect image. The September updates were then offered again, this time without KB2984006, and they installed successfully.

In the latest issue of the Windows Secrets newsletter Susan Bradley's patch watch refers to KB2984006 for Win 8.1 but not for Win 7. Do fellow loungers agree that I can forget KB2984006?

    Confirmation would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

    satrow, thanks for the confirmation.

I wonder why Microsoft offered me this update for Win 7, but I suppose I'll never know.

REVISED Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2984006)

On a Windows 8.1 system, note that KB2984006 will NOT show up in the "View Update History" (control panel > windows update > view update history) but, rather, under "Installed Updates" (control panel > programs and features > installed updates).

Moreover, activity for this patch is listed in the Reporting Events log (c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.l og) as such:

Success } Content Install } Installation Started: Windows has started installing the following update: Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2984006)
Success } Content Install } Installation pending
Success } Content Install } Restart Required

and, despite shutting down and rebooting on subsequent days, it wasn't until 2 days passed that the following was logged:

Success } Content Install Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2984006)

On a Win8.1 system in my group, activity warnings were listed in the Windows Update log (c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log) as such:

1032 c24 DtaStor WARNING: Attempted to add URL http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/...97a8a67dfa.msu for file KLzD42AAg4a/ZuC/HUMgl6imffo= when file has not been previously added to the datastore
