    Recover .chk files?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but I thought as I will be using w8.1 to do this I'd ask here.
My old HD running Vista failed and when I ran chkdsk I ended up with hundreds if not thousands of chk files.
I think a lot of them might be old photos, can anyone recommend a program (free is good) to analyse and rename these files to their original file names/extensions?
I saved them along with all the other information that was left on my old hard drive, they now reside on a backup external usb drive.

In my experience CHK files are next to useless because they do not contain contiguous data - your data was split into fragments on disk and recorded in the FAT, but the fragments recovered do not have a list of what fragment goes with what fragment. It's just a jigsaw puzzle without the original picture to refer to and no edge pieces. Recovery from backup is the best option.

    cheers, Paul

I didn't have any backup Paul. I learned that lesson the hard way I'm afraid.
