Ooops! Locked out of Administrator logon

With years of experience from 3.1 to Win 7 Pro does not make for a Win 8.1 expert.

Two users, one with Admin authority and one without. The one with Admin authority is not recognized at logon. The "General" user can't do anything to resolve. What do I need to do to "break" into the system to get the administrator logged in?

    Thanks,
    Bill

With the troublesome machine at hand, I cannot get passed the option "Manage Another Account", as Win 8 requires administrator privileges in order to proceed. Even if I knew the password, the authorization prompt does not provide a pane in which to enter one.

It would seem at this point that I'm up the proverbial creek????

You may be able to do this after you have booted up into Safe Mode http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...-in-safe-mode/

Selecting Safe Mode with Command Prompt, you could enable the hidden admin account with the command net user Administrator /active:yes - but I don't know how you would navigate from there to "Manage Another Account".

Changing the :yes to :no will deactivate the hidden admin account when you're done.

The approach you offer might just work if I can get the administrator exposed for a sign-in. I'll have access to the crippled laptop again next week, so I'll try it then.

Once you have enabled the hidden admin account, rebooting back into Safe Mode should enable you to navigate to create the new admin account - at least that's the theory
