    Disappearing Act (Win98, Word 97-2SR)

Would anyone know why, when I have Word open, and I open the File dropdown list it disappears. The box drops down but there is nothing in it. If I carry on to Edit, View Favorites, etc. they are all there. I have to shut down Word for it to return the contents of the box.
    Thanks for any help. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

This is, obviously, not a behavior you can make happen voluntarily. Have you considered re-installing Word/Office? It looks like you might have a corrupt DLL or registry entry.

Unfortunately, I don't have the disks to re-install. Is there any way I can find out if there is a corrupted DLL? I don't want to fool with the registry if I can help it. But I will with proper direction. Thanks for your reply.

Use System Files Checker. Click Start | Run, type
    SFC
    and hit Enter.
