    What is a .docx file?

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium along with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007. I must have downloaded an update or something because suddenly my Word documents with the .doc extension switched to .docx extension with no input from me that I am aware of. This is inconvenient as I am only a home user and not hugely productive and when I click on a .docx icon in my files Word will not open it unless I select it from a list. How can I fix this? Please.

.docx is the new default extension for Micr$oft Word documents , supposedly as an upgrade to .doc. (I think it was to make operability with other programs more difficult). You should be able to open the files with Word, then "save as" a "Microsoft Word 1997-2003 document."

.docx is the default 'file save' format for MS Word 2007 onwards. The format is similar to a ZIP file container that contains the content, styles, etc. as XML files within.

If you would prefer to use the earlier .doc format then it's easy to change the default 'file save' format by doing the following from within Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007:

    1. Click on the round Office button top-left of the MS Word window.
    2. Select the Word Options button at the bottom of the left-hand pane.
    3. Select Save in the left-hand list of options.
    4. Change the Save files in this format option in the dropdown list from Word document (*.docx) to Word 97-2003 (*.doc) then click on the OK button at the bottom-right of the dialog.

That's it... any new docs will prompt you to save as .doc instead of .docx.

    Hope this helps...
