    Problem with blank CDs

When I insert a blank CD in my CD/DVD drive the LED blinks for ever but nothing happens, and nothing is shown in the Computer Window. (Device Manager says the drive is working properly, I have not changed the driver and I have enabled Autoplay). Also, until I remove the CD from the drive whatever program I have open, or try to open, freezes. Apart from that, when the CD is removed I am asked to insert a disk in the drive.

I have not had these problems before, and have no problems with blank DVDs.

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

Here are a few things for you to work your way through, but try the auto fixit link first http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

With the disk inserted does DVD Drive E: appear in the left pane of Windows explorer - if it does, double click on it and ensure that it is to be used with the CD/DVD player.

Sudo15, I tried the auto fixit link first, but that didn't work. Resolution 2 didn't work either. Regarding Resolution 3, I found the correct registry key in the left pane manually, as Registry Editor failed to do so, but neither the upper nor lower filters appeared in the right pane. Resolution 4 didn't work either. I could not find an updated driver, so I uninstalled the driver and restarted my PC. After the restart the device driver was installed. DVDs are still not a problem, but the same problem persisted with CDs, so I tried Resolution 5, but that didn't work either, so what do I do now?

Open a command prompt as an administrator and enter sfc /scannow to see what that reports - also check Event Viewer to see if that has anything recorded.

If they don't have anything on it and it can't read any other disks, then it's probably dead and you'll need a replacement.

sfc /scannow reported that there were no integrity violations and there was nothing in Event Viewer relating to the problem.

As I said before the drive has no problem with DVD disks so it is not dead.

All I can think of is that there is something wrong with the CDs I used. I will get others and report back.

Have you used that brand of CDs before or tried any more from the pack ?

Trying them on another machine if possible could help but some computers just don't like some brands of disks.

The brands I tried were of various makes, some of which I have used before, and they work on my friend's PC. As I said in post #6 I will get other CDs and report back, and if you have any other ideas please let me know.

It could still be the disk player as they have a DVD diode and a CD diode with the latter being shot.

If it doesn't play pre-recorded or CDs that you have recorded on and as you've tried all of the software fixes, then I guess it only leaves that as the problem.

I was frustrated several years ago when a Dell computer couldn't work with the black Memorex and darker colored CDs but figured out it worked with white discs, both Memorex and other brands. Haven't tried the black ones since. I've had the best success with Verbatim, Sony and TDK, Kodak when I could get them.

Roy, I don't know if this will help, but I had problems once with an IDE CD/DVD drive. I replaced it with another IDE CD/DVD drive, but it didn't fix the problem. I then replaced it with a SATA CD/DVD drive, and the problem disappeared. If your drive is IDE, consider replacing it with a SATA drive. You can pick one up cheap on Ebay.

Make sure that you have an available SATA connection on your motherboard and power supply.
