Multiple numberings in same .doc (Word2K)

I know there must be a way to do this but looking at the posts here about Numbering Dementia, I'm petrified to try, since my years of attempts have already failed.

    Should be simple enough, right?

In the manual I'm typesetting, the chapters and appendices all start with Heading1, level 1.

I want the chapters to start with Chapter 1: title, and the appendices to start with Appendix A: title.

It seems I can have ALL Heading1 grafs be Chapter 1 or Appendix A, or Chapter A, or Appendix 1, but not what I want.

Should I give up? (I'm happy to do something demented, as long as it works.)

    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

At my URL below, see the article Numbering of clauses using SEQ fields in an Annex.

    Dave,

This may or may not fit in the demented category, but anyway....

You could have two separate styles, one for the "1" headings, and one for the "A" headings.

Make one of the styles level one in your outline numbered list, and make the other style level two in your outline numbered list.

(If you already had additional numbering and styles defined at levels two, three etc., you would need to redefine each of them down one level i.e. what was at level two would now be at level 3 etc.)

With this method, you should be able to start chapters with either the level 1 or level 2 style, and the levels below them should work properly including automatic restarts for each chapter.

    That's not the best practice.

I have not yet checked what Word 10 does, has Microsoft remedied this problem?

I do expect to purchase Office 2002 next month, but first I need to install another Win 2000 partition.

Two different files sounds fastest to me. Or should I say, at least two, if this is a sizable work.

How about setting up a separate set of styles for your Appendices and attaching them to a different List Template. They can still be level 1-9 and can have the same text formatting as heading 1-9 but just be attached to a different numbering scheme.

If you'll send me (langert@fcg.com) your email address, I'll send you a document that explains exactly how I accomplish this. (The document is too large to post here...sorry.)

I am assuming you are putting your appendices at the end of the document. My report template has 4 different numbering outlines and works great.

You can set up the actual report so that Chapter # is set for a style (and any additional levels needed). Where the appendices start, you can start a new outline (using Heading 1, etc. if you need to have the footer in the appendix A-1, B-1, etc). What I do is figure out my numbering needed for the report portion and set up the numbering needed and linking it to the style preferred. I then do the same with the appendices. (I also have 2 different numberings for tables and figures, which in my template is between the report portion and the appendices)

    Hi Leanne:
I am interested in looking at your report template. Could you zip it & attach it here, if you don't mind?

    Phil:

I tried zipping it - too large. Can I e-mail you personally?

    Charles,

    > but just be attached to a different numbering scheme

Maybe that's my problem - I haven't a clue how I'd do that, and the messages on this forum have left me more than a little gun-shy about naive experimentation!

Do you mean just go to Level 1 and select Restart Numbering? That doesn't work - my Chapter_N and Appendix_N settings interfere with each other.

Re: Multiple numberings in same .doc (Word2K)

Thanks for the document you emailed me. I'll repeat, here, the reply I sent in mail, in the spirit of community.

[For those who don't know, Larry's method is to have the appendices start with Heading 7, which is formatted like Heading 1. Subheads in the appendices are Heading 8 and 9. His instructions repeatedly warn that all levels must be defined in one session, without closing the numbering dialog. My reply:]

Interesting trick, this "Level 7" thing.

So tell me, what happens if you dare to close the dialog before defining all the levels?? (Bugs?)

And what the heck is going on inside Word if you define the same settings for all the heading levels but you start from Heading2? (I know the result behaves weirdly, but what IS going on in Word - how/why does it behave that way? Or is it just plain buggy?)

--Would your method work for multiple sequences, e.g. Heading1-Heading4, then Heading5-Heading7, then Heading8-Heading9?

    In response to your response:
Q1: What happens if you dare to close the dialog before defining all the levels?? (Bugs?)
A1: As I've been given to understand, all bets are off if you don't define everything in one fell swoop. (But I can't prove this to be fact...I just play safe.)

Q2: What the heck is going on inside Word if you define the same settings for all the heading levels but you start from Heading2?
A2: I've never tried that, but I think it would work with one BIG drawback. In the scheme I use, I want the appendices to show up in the TOC parallel to the "real" Heading 1 items. If you build the structure based on Heading 2, that won't happen. (Again, I haven't tried it.)

    Dave:

Here's a look at mine to see what I'm talking about. Had trouble attaching it yesterday due to size but I was able to get it done this morning. Hopefully the numbering will make sense and is somewhat what you are looking for. If not, I'd be happy to help you get yours set up.
