Windows 10 Preview first three days

There is a system audit for this test system following this write up.
    ************************************************** ****************************************

NOTE: Windows 10 Preview installed without any problems, no device drivers were required as everything was supported. A brand new hard drive was used, this was not an upgrade.
    Summary:
    =======
This version of Windows 10 works well enough that I could live with it as is.
I was having problems with some metro apps and IE. After I went to the video card's vendor and install their latest driver things cleared up.

I know most of my business clients will not like the APP store unless they plan to use the cloud for storage or software, I will set them up with local accounts only. Microsoft wants to share too much personal data and are trying to push xbox and other games, not a good thing for business customers.

From a service point of view, there is a need to be able to access the boot options for UEFI systems at boot up. Microsoft offers a way to boot into safe mode, why not a way to select a USB device or a DVD? Sometimes there are problems that can only be fixed by booting from a source other than the system drive.

    Pricing, versions and upgrades suggestions:

Only 3 versions of Windows 10 are needed. Well I can dream can't I?
Windows 10 Simple - for older systems running XP or older hardware as long as it meets minim requirements.
Windows 10 Secure - for enterprise, government, military, banking or other large corporations that need extra layers of security.
Windows 10 General(pro) - for everyone else, home, business & enterprise workstations.

    Upgrades:
Windows 10 Simple: $20.00 please encourage people to upgrade.
Windows 10 Secure: $40.00 for any version of Vista or Windows 7, FREE for any version of Windows 8 & 8.1
Windows 10 General: $25.00 for any version of Vista or Windows 7, FREE for any version of Windows 8 & 8.1

I know that if Windows pricing is the same as previous versions, none of my clients will be going to Windows 10. I already know of 4 that are talking Apple as their next system.

AnyBurn Version ? This is a CD, DVD & BD burner - http://www.anyburn.com

Installed Office 2010 64 bit, testing in progress
Word is OK, Excel is OK, Outlook is OK.

WINKEY + CTRL + D (to add a desktop) (WINKEY + TAB - to select a different desktop with mouse)
You can switch between your available desktops at any time.
Keyboard short cut: WINKEY + CTRL + LEFT ARROW or WINKEY + CTRL + RIGHT ARROW

The old metro start screen of Windows 8/8.1 is no longer reachable?????
Found the way to enable the metro start screen in the task bar properties.
Do not like the results as one can not have the full start button functions and the metro screen both. I feel that both would be a better option.

Nero 2014 Have not used all features but what I have seem to work OK.

Found how to boot in safe mode but not how to disable safe boot.
Need to be able to access boot menu to select a different boot device, USB or other external device.

EaseUS ToDo Backup Free software Version 7. Backup was good.

Team Viewer version 7 Out going connection works. will test incoming and remote desktop later.
Team Viewer incoming works and RDT (remote desktop) works.

Netflix metro app worked, also my BD player worked.

No network problems were detected, installed software from my 2008 server and backed up to a WDMYCLOUD device, played music from the WDMYCLOUD.

Since yesterday, I've not been able to print from Firefox. It just prints blank pages. This occurs on two computers running WTP. Have you noticed anything like this?

I have not had any problems printing with any of my browsers. My printer is a networked printer and when I installed it the installation package went to the vendors WEB site and downloaded the latest software. Sorry that at this time I only have the one printer, I should have my Brother back in the next few days and try it.

I did forget to include the "AnyDVD" software was also installed. It is the reason that I'm able to play BD movies.

Pat, I just installed the first update for WTP and now I have print problems. I use IE, Firefox and Opra browsers. Trying to print a WEB page from any fails with blank pages or no output. I did find that if I selected print preview and then printed I could output to Foxit Reader PDF printer or to OneNote I did get what I wanted. When I tried to print to the printer I got a "Software communications error", please cancel all print jobs and reboot. However the page did print OK. Additional messages indicate the status of the ink levels and paper could not be gotten from the printer. This could be Microsoft or a vendor driver issue, I think a little of both maybe.

Re: "...access the boot options for UEFI systems at boot up...".

You should be able to enter UEFI settings at boot-time. Immediately after the first "splash screen" or "POST screen" and before Windows begins to load begin tapping whatever keyboard key to enter UEFI setup (most often the "Delete" key or the "F2" key).

From what I have seen so far UEFI's "secure boot" feature won't allow you to boot from standard USB or CD/DVD drives. You have to turn off "secure boot" then adjust boot device settings (usually adjust "boot device priority" and/or "boot legacy devices" or similar wording).

UEFI's "secure boot" is probably good for users working in large organisations handling sensitive data (banks, etc.) but it is a real PITA for many users who need to be able to boot from USB or CD/DVD.

    Coochin,

I find it very interesting that Macrium Reflect Free & Paid can create Win PE boot CD/DVDs and USB devices that boot just fine on my Dell XPS 8700 using UEFI & Secure Boot ( I actually have the code loaded on a partition of my 3TB WD MyBook and save my Images in the other partition).

However, Microsoft distributes it's Windows Defender Offline that will automatically make a bootable USB key but I have to change my boot settings to Legacy to get it to boot!

So It's the software makers who are behind the times in not updating their software for UEFI/Secure Boot not the UEFI/Secure Boot feature at fault here. HTH

    Interesting.

From what I have read about UEFI so far the intent of "secure boot" is to prevent (or make it difficult for) baddies (thieves, pranksters, etc.) from booting from USB or CD/DVD to gain access and avoid passwords and other security measures (fingerprint readers, etc.).

With most of the UEFI computers I have worked on so far it was fairly easy to disable "secure boot" in UEFI settings after the computer's initial boot, but some laptops were very difficult to coerce into UEFI settings to disable "secure boot" and adjust settings to boot from USB or CD/DVD.

It's not necessarily the case that the software makers are behind the times - from what I have read the UEFI forum (see Wikipedia Unified EFI Forum) are putting pressure on software makers to discourage them from avoiding the UEFI "secure boot" feature.

    UEFI boot

What I was suggesting was that Microsoft could supply support people an option to reboot to a USB or other device and then it would not be necessary to get into the UEFI at all. I have been down this road more than I wanted to. Yes Malcum, EaseUS, Active@Boot and some others will create boot-able devices, but they don't work on all systems.

But then why should I complain, I get paid by the hour.

Just FYI: I'm a retired (HA HA) field support technician, 55 years.

Over all I like Windows 10
The only thing that I have found was Internet Explorer stops working and have do recovery
Now have both 8.1 and 10 as a dual boot
