    Small Office Curiosity (97 & 2000)

I bought my machine with MS Small Office 2000 installed, and it ostensibly does not include Access 2000. So I loaded and am using a copy of Access97. It resides in my MS OfficeOffice folder. HOWEVER, much to my surprise I just noticed that I have another folder within the the MS OfficeOffice folder labeled "Access 2000 Files" and in that folder I find three files: MSACCESS.EXE, MSACCESS.SRG and MSACCESS.PIF which look suspiciously like Access 2000. When I try to run that MSACCESS.EXE file I get an error message saying that the operating system is not configured to run this application.

I realize that Small Office isn't supposed to include Access, but it rather bugs me to discover that I have an application loaded that I cannot use. I wonder if I bought an Access 2000 upgrade would it consist of a CD that does nothing but configure a program that already resides on my computer or what?

Has anyone else run across this phenomena? I'm just curious.

That sounds like an MSAccess runtime that may be used by another application. I can't remember if any of the other Office apps use Access as a datastore. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

As you discovered, just because it's there doesn't mean that you can use it directly because Access 2000 is *not* installed, although the runtime may be.
