    Guest secure?

I have been asked to add a "Guest" access to a local company Wi Fi network. The hardware is not a problem as the router in use has a "Guest" function built in. A friend and sort of colleague has warned me against this. He has security concerns it appears but we haven't had time to sit down and discuss it.

Is this a potential security risk?

Thanks for any thoughts or contributions to my knowledge on the subject.

    It depends.
If the guest account has access to the local network then you have a security problem.
If the guest account is on a VLAN that only grants internet access then you are OK.
What do you want to access via the guest account?

    cheers, Paul

    Thanks for the reply Paul.

The only thing the "Guest" account will be accessing is the internet connection. It will be locked out of the network except for that function. The router provides the security in this case. It is a Cisco/Linksys 4200 and I have not heard of any security issues relating to the "Guest" account previous to my friends advice. I guess I will have to wait for his return to get the problems he in-visions. I just wanted to get other opinions to see if I was way off base or not.

    Richard,

It looks safe to me. From my Linksys EA4500 router:

It seems that router has guest access that allows only internet access, so no issues AFAIAC.

    cheers, Paul

Most hospitals, schools and universities, as well as many businesses, provide guest wireless internet access without any risks to their internal systems.
