New Folder Name Problem

When you create a new folder, the name should be selected so that you can immediately type the required folder name.
Instead New Folder is accepted and I have to right click on rename.
There is nothing in options that I can find to correct this so I suspect a registry tweak is required. Can anyone please confirm that I am correct and advise what the tweak is?

I've not experienced this problem except by mis-typing, as outlined further below.

Most times I am successful using the keyboard as follows:

(In Windows Explorer) Alt-F, Enter, Enter, NewFolderName, Enter.

Unsuccesful: (In Windows Explorer) Alt-F, Enter, Enter, Enter, NewFolderName, Enter.

I have a feeling that Peter is using the right-mouse-button menu to do this (as do I).

I'm going to agree with you Peter.... it does seem to be programmed that way. I as of yet, haven't found an option to change it.

Then i don't see/understand the problem.

If I'm using a Mouse, I L/C on File, L/C on New, L/C on Folder then type the folder name and tap Enter.


How do you create a new folder name? You gotta type it (OK, or paste it as I sometimes do), and the name New Folder appears highlighted, ready to be typed/pasted over. I think that when I say "highlighted" you-all mean "selected".

Am I missing something? (apart from hair)

When in any open folder, if you right click, you'll get a context menu, where you can create a new folder (and various file types).

If you do it this way, it automatically calls the folder, <font color=blue>New Folder</font color=blue>.

Maybe it's something to do with how the folder options are set or something. I have created new folders using the method you just described for as long as I can remember, and it creates the folder with the name highlighted so I can type in the new name for the folder. I'm running 98SE and I don't have to right-click on the folder again to rename it. Just create a new folder, type the name, and hit enter and it's good to go.

You're correct.... I was mistaken. It does ask when I do it in that fashion, what I'd like the name to be (highlighted, waiting for input).

[cheery] I know that, and I possibly learned it from you! The original question, waaay up there, seemed to suggest that when creating a new folder it was necessary to do something other than type the desired name over selected text.

It's true that if I want to type a folder name and the current name isn't selected, I can R/C or F2, but when I'm CREATING a new folder, (File, New, Folder) my "New Folder" name is alreday/automatically selected/highlighted.

I dare say that there's a problem, but I can't duplicate what I perceive the problem to be on my machine.

Of course, sometimes I'm not too perceptive. I remember back in June 1977 .....

Thanks for all the responses. I have been otherwise distracted for a while. Yes I was using the right click menu and No I wasn't getting "New Folder" highlighted ready to type the new name.

Fixed the problem though. Reformatted the PC! Now that'll teach it to behave.
