    MSI problem

I have a Windows problem that has been around since I think at least Vista, on an 8.1 system. There are extremely long threads at several sites discussing it in earlier days, and Google will provide many hits.

My Windows will no longer install programs that have an msi extension. It just quit, early in November, when I tried to update Calibre. The existing version of that program is fine, but I canít justify installing valuable new programs to a setup that isnít working.

I have never run into this before; there appear to be too many cures for a single problem; Microsoft themselves have known about it for years and it looks like even they donít know how to fix it. Does anyone here know how?

I've not looked at the issue but I'd run the following:
    msiexec /i programupdate.msi

    cheers, Paul

    Solved

I took the path of least resistance and restored to a state prior to the problem, and updated from there.

The suggestions were welcome (and were tried, unsuccessfully), but nothing beats a backup (even if it's a month old).

For those not having backups [yet], they can try Windows Repair (All in One), from tweaking.com, there is a click for fixing MSI.
