How can I insert a page number with a letter (i.e. page 49-A) in a footer?

Is this a special number for just one page, or is every page number suffixed with -A? In the latter case, you could place a page number field in your footer and follow it with -A. You should not use Insert, Page number for this, because it inserts a frame that makes positioning trickier. Instead, open your footer and use the page number symbol on the footer toolbar to insert the field code, then type -A after it.

If you want special numbering for a page in the middle of a document, I think you will need to create a section break before and after that page, so that you can have a different footer. Does this help?

You might want to take a look at Page Numbering in Word.

It should be easy unless you want 49-A to be between 49 and 50. If you do, you're working against the way Word thinks about documents and it won't be easy, still possible, just not easy.
