Windows 7 [upgrading to Windows 8]

My stepson has a Dell laptop running Windows 7. He wants to upgrade/update to Windows 8. Does he have to buy Windows 8 OS and reload it or can he get the upgrade for free?

I think he has to buy either Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1; the only free upgrade was from 8.0 to 8.1 -- either OEM or Microsoft. There are features, benefits, consequences with either OEM or MS-official, research and choose what appears to give you both what you want.

Yes, he'll need to purchase it if Dell does/has not specifically offered an upgrade. (check with Dell website)
I would recomend getting the 8.1 disk instaed of 8 and upgrading to 8.1

Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Build your own system; get everything you want and nothing you don't.
    Latest Build:

EVGA GTX980, Seasonic PLATINUM-1000W PSU, MountainMods U2-UFO Case, and 7 other internal drives.

You will probably have to buy the upgrade, but check it out before you do.

When did he buy the laptop? If he bought it after Windows 8 was released, he may have gotten a machine that had a Windows 8 Pro license that allowed Windows 7 Pro to be installed and shipped with it. Dell and many other OEMs did this, because most people prefer Windows 7. If so, He will have to find out the original Windows 8 license code, but he won't have to buy it.

If it is Windows 7 Home Premium, or if it was manufactured before October of 2009, I'm pretty sure he won't have a Windows 8 license for the laptop.

I'd buy an SSD for the laptop instead. More speed, more fun!

    cheers, Paul
