Problem pasting from word 2010 to excel 2010

When I try to paste text from word 2010 to excel 2010 the result in excel always goes into multiple cells in the target row instead of one.

    How can I prevent this?

    Rec,

What type of data are you copy/pasting? Is it just text or is it a table?
If it is just text are you sure it isn't just overflowing the width of the pasted to cell into adjacent empty cell's display space?
You can test this by pasting into say A1 then double clicking the separator line between the Column headers A | B (you must do this up in the column label area) this will expand the width of column A to the length of the widest value in the column. Do B,C,D, etc now show empty?

BTW: I tried pasting from a word 2010 doc to excel 2010 and it worked just as it should for plain text. I verified this with the above method.

    rec,

instead of pasting into the cell, try selecting the cell first, say A1. With the cell A1 selected, click in the formula bar then hit ctrl-V. Now click cell B1 and you should see all your pasted data appear in A1. Keep in mind that there may be preceding spaces that may have been carried over and the data may not be visible. You may have to format the cell to wrap the text so it appears.

I am definately pasting into multiple cells.

I tried variations of your suggestion and I think I understand what is happening.

This time I was pasting text from a pdf to excel. when I paste into a clean sheet it seems to work correctly.
If I have been using the text to columns tool with "space" selected as delimiter the paste goes into multiple cells.
If I deselect "space" as a delimiter it works correctly.

The extra step of always deselecting the delimiter is a real pain when copying and pasting many text entries.

    Any suggestions?
