    Malwarebytes bites me

I ran MB last weekend to do a scan it wanted to update itself but I just told it to scan. All OK. Except for those pum things I mentioned in another post. Afterward I figured I would let it update itself. I was careful (or so I thought) to only update to another free version. Some how I ended up wth a trial version. I know this is a popular program on these forums, I just want to caution: the only indication I got it was running in realtime mode was an icon in the tray (and a couple of things in task manager that one would have to look for) I might not figured out what was further slowing down my venerable XP system. Just a caution they are getting sneakier.
I am hoping a simple uninstall will have no adverse consequences.....

An uninstall won't give you any problems. As for the trial version, a couple of weeks ago I installed the paid-for version for a friend who kept getting browser helpers loading on his PC. Even paying for it with his credit card and then downloading the installation package, it offered a trial version. I just un-ticked the box, and it installed as the paid version.

Before I had decided for myself to buy it, I updated and un-ticked the trial checkbox, and it ran fine; just not live. I finally bought it, to get the "live" parts.

I think some have had problems when the trial has expired and wanted to continue just using the free version.

Probably best to use the mbam-clean.exe to remove all traces then reinstall, remembering to uncheck the trial box.

I assume you realize they went to a yearly subscription model rather the one time lifetime purchase they used to have. They grandfathered in anyone who bought the lifetime purchase before they changed.

Yes, I got grandfathered, but my friend is on the subscription model. But, he's singing its praises.

There should be an "End Free Trial" link in the lower-right area of MBAM's window if the trial version is active or expired.

Maybe it's not too late; perhaps contact them and ask if you can adjust, add to, the present license. The worst thing they can say is no. maybe they will say yes.

I don't have a license for the laptop. The license for the desktop is only good for 1 PC. I can transfer it but you can't extend it to multiple PCs.

Jerry, I guess my earlier post was muddy, I indicated that if you contacted them and asked them, maybe Malwarebytes will add your laptop to your current license, uping you, for a small onetime fee, to a 2PC grandfathered "eternal" license. Actually, many antiThis antiThat programs have been rolling out 3PC and/or 3YR license combinations. I have a few 3PC/1YR, I have a few 3YR/1PC, and recently I've been able to snag a couple of 3PC/3YR license.

Having more than once paid money for Malwarebytes i was very disappointed with annual subscription, so disappointed i went straight back to using Spybot. Though I paid to use latest Spybot I ditched that and installed the older version, and though Tea-Timer is now not so aggressive am very pleased to see Spybot doing its job.
One downside Kaspersky still running a war with Spybot, well as it turns out (long version) RoboForm went to annual subscription, another theif, anyway up until yesterday had been running FireFox 3.6, which paid-for RoboForm version 6, worked fine. FireFox 3.6 was hated by hotmail and other sites, so updated FireFox a paid subscription to thief RoboForm, then Kaspersky wouldn't install its Add-ons errr.
Ended up ditching Kaspersky, which i had been using since Adam was a Cowboy as version 2015 didn't work in Outlook 2007, purchased AVG Internet Security and have now installed Nightly a 64 bit version of FireFox, Outlook works, Nightly and Chrome and no war going on between AVG and Spybot or with SuperAntiSpyware which i am also running.
So was the year for good bye Malwarebytes and good bye Kaspersky, very best wishes for 2015 yee all from robplum

Spybot v2.4 free version is available from http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ (look for the "Download Spybot 2.4 Free Edition" link).

I have found Spybot v2.4 more effective than the older 1.6.2 version.

Since the subject of using "Spybot Search & Destroy" has already been broached, may I say.....

"Spybot 1.6.2 is a great program and can find and remove things that other programs don't. But...(there's always a But, right?) It seems to be more of a technicians tool than a program for the nube or casual PC user. There are many functions of the program that you'll never even see, if you don't immediately put it in Advanced Mode. Then never install the Teatimer....that thing can drive you crazy. It's especially bad for the old folks who just don't want to be messed with.

After working with the program, years ago, when I first got it, I found that success with that program is all in the install/setup. So I spent considerable time, writing up a full page of install instructions, which I posted to my own website and have sent to many prospective Spybot S&D users, via PM or email. Like I said, It's a PAGE, so I won't post it here....unless requested by a Mod.

Two important functions of the program is the "Immunization" and under 'Tools' the BHO display function, where you can see what BHO's are attached to your browsers and delete the ones you don't want. Very few programs have that function.

I share Spybot S&D with all my customers and I give them a page of instructions on how to Update, Immunize and Scan, once a week. Spybot posts their updates on Wednesday each week.

I looked at the new version when it first came out and decided it was much too complicated for my Old customers. They would never run it, so it would be pointless to give it to them. So we all continue to use Spybot S&D 1.6.2.46 (Final Version).

Another program that I rely heavily on, and is seldom mentioned is "Super Anti-Spyware". It's the only program I have that will find and remove all those nasty 'Tracking Cookies', along with a bunch of PUP's. The FREE version works great!

    Cheers Mates and Stay Safe!

    Happy Holidays
