Devices for stronger Wi-Fi and data security

    By Michael Lasky

When a company makes seemingly outrageous claims about its new product, it's a dare just begging to be tested. So we took on a Wi-Fi extender touting a 10,000-square-foot signal range, an ultra-fast and light wireless scanner, and a portable hard drive boasting "the ultimate in data security." For a bit of fun, we also looked at the new Amazon Fire TV Stick.

One feature of the Amazon's Fire TV Stick not mentioned is the minimum download speed necessary to be a useful device. Although AT&T calls my service "high speed", my download speed is 1 Mbps. This turns out to be much too slow for the Amazon Fire TV Stick to be useful.

Re Amped Extender: I hate to be a grump, but do the math. a "10,000 sq ft" range is a circle 113 ft in diameter, i.e. a max of 57 feet away from the device. That doesn't seem all that impressive when you put it like that, does it? To be fair, your own tests showed that the Amped device handily exceeded that. I just wish someone could create an extender that has a range of three quarters of a million CUBIC feet (we live in 3 dimensions after all.) Wow, wouldn't THAT be somethin!
