Exclamation Windows Update kb3013769 on 9th Dec 2014 caused Win 8.1 x86 not to boot.

The monthly installation of Windows Update on 9th Dec 2014 including Optional updates led to my PC being unable to boot. I always keep a disk image before installing Windows Update so was able to go back and test all the components. All the Win Office and Security updates installed with no problem rebooting. However of the two optional updates KB3013826 caused no problem but the other KB3013769 was the update that caused the PC being unable to boot. I don't know if this is a problem unique to my PC but if not beware.

You are not alone. Its been suggested that a conflict with Kaspersky may be to blame. There are so many possible combinations of software and hardware that its impossible for MS to test its patches against all of them. The corollary of Murphy's Law, "Every solution causes new problems" therefore applies.
