Can't access Windows Explorer the usual way(s)

I have the usual "folders" icon on my taskbar, and "Windows Explorer" + "folders" icon on the Start menu.

Each time I click either of the spots, I get the attached message:

Anyone have an idea how I can get things right again? I manage to get Windows Explorer to load by opening the Start menu, mousing over to the Windows Explorer item and, when the menu expands, I pick some icon I've either "pinned" to the Start menu or which is "recent."

That works, but it's kind of a pain. Ayudame, por favor!!

    Thanks, people.

What do you get if you click Start, then type in the search box (without the quotes), "explorer.exe"? You should be able to click on the search result at the top (explorer.exe) and open an explorer window.
Create a fresh drive image before making system changes, in case you need to start over!
