New to Windows 7, need advice on picture handling programs

I'm new to using Windows 7 (up from XP) and learning about a new PC at the same time. The MS Office Picture Manager program works OK but with limited features. Is MS Digital Image Pro worth downloading (even if free, is it useful for Gamma adjusting, sharpening images, etc.)? Any recommendations for a better experience? I don't do anything very complicated with photos but Pic. Mgr. isn't enough.

If it's similar to MS DI 2006, it has very good exposure settings and color and saturation settings broken down to gamma level control so gamma is covered more comprehensively. Sharpening is mediocre with just unsharp mask settings, no high pass sharpen filter that I can see which is what I use extensively in Paint Shop Pro (with just a dusting of unsharp mask added sometimes).

You could try the Gimp. I Googled for gamma and gimp, and came up with this:

It also has many options including sharpening

    Oh, and it's free.

I use Picasa to manage my pictures, then GIMP if I want to do anything really interesting.

    cheers, Paul
