    Error message: Cannot Start Application

I am running Windows 7 Professional on a Dell PC with 8GB RAM. Occasionally, an error message pops up, titled "Cannot Start Application." The box says, "Cannot continue. The application is improperly formatted. Contact the application vendor for assistance." It happens when I have not tried to start any application, at least, not intentionally. Usually, it will duplicate itself several times, no matter whether I click "OK", the "X" to close it, or "Details." Eventually, it stops reappearing.

If I click "Details", I get a log like this:

Have you run any AV/AM scans?

bbearren, I tried to google and find out what impressionway.com is, however, all I got was 403 errors, forbidden to access errors. ?I'm wondering if that could be part of the problem?

Some googling indicates that the log is from a M$ .Net program, and there were several mentions of ClickOnce.

Possibly you have downloaded something from a website that used a "Download Manager" program that might have been created using "ClickOnce"?

It is certainly suspicious - as Roland says in his #4 post the links to "impressionway.com" are invalid (seems that website no longer exists).

You should run scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and Spybot Search and Destroy (look for the "Download Spybot 2.4 Free Edition" link).

I would try a Clean boot and see if the error still occurs. If the error no longer occurs, use a process of elimination to determine the culprit.

I clicked on the link in the post. It appears to be a "drive by" download for malware. That's why I suggested an AV/AM scan.

HitmanPro may help; Malwarebytes Anti-Malware ought to be able to help. Emsisoft Anti-Malware is another source.

The same thing happened to be literally 5 minutes ago.

It did it 3 times and stopped.

Is my computer infected or does that mean it failed to install the virus?

    Should I be worried?

Anyone seeing this kind of unexpected error should, as advised by other posters, run anti-malware scans ASAP to remove whatever it is that is causing the error (Malwarebytes, Spybot, ADWcleaner, etc.).

At present whatever the program is trying to do is stopped by the error because it cannot communicate with the specified website (in this case "impressionway.com" but I have seen a number of posts in other forums complaining of very similar errors but referencing different websites).

The worry is that if those websites start working again the errors will go away but the malware will then be able to continue with whatever mischief it is intended to do.

Download ADWcleaner and run it. It doesn't install, it runs as a standalone.

I just finished an Avast Boot Time Scan with no viruses found.

    Trying ADW Cleaner now.
