trouble with Win updates-continual memory dump

I reinstalled to factory settings an Asus notebook, using the recovery discs I made when the PC was purchased (Jan 2010). Worked perfect and I began to go through all the updates I knew would come along. I thought most had been done however 4 failed (on Dec 24 - KB2564958, KB2619339, KB3006226 and KB2836943) Then on Jan 1 along came 35 more, all successfully installed except the Definitions 1.191.828.0 KB2310138 which showed as Canceled - twice. January 2 comes along and 50 more updates come along which take a very long time to install however after the system reboots the PC becomes unstable and begins to do a Memory Dump several times over the next hour. I checked the list of installed updates and all those updates are PENDING. Another Memory Dump comes along and I again checked the list, now all are listed as FAILED. Now an new batch of updates have come up, 91 of them and I am now downloading these in hopes that this may stabilize the PC.

The only programs I installed were MS Security Essentials, my purchased copy of Malware Bytes Pro and Firefox.

Any thoughts on what is happening?

ps - another Memory Dump has just occurred, interrupting the downloading of those 91 updates!

If the system is crashing and all you are doing is installing patches then you may have a hardware problem.

First, have you cleaned the air vents?

Have you run any hardware diagnostics?

Well, Joe, its a little notebook [ASUS UL 30A] with a single vent left side. I checked for excessive heat and it IS warm but not hot. However, I have just used PC air on the vent and ran the air over the bottom and keyboard to cool it even more.

Currently it is once again downloading the 91 updates. So far so good. *fingers crossed*.

Still very puzzled by the "PENDING" and then the "FAILED" group. Update overload?

Up date on my UPDATE.... the 91 updates are still, after nearly 2 hours, STILL downloading '79 of 91'.

It's a little late now but I would have done them around 20 - 25 at a time. I've run into a case where two or more of the updates conflict with each other when you run that many. If the updates fail, try doing them in smaller bunches.

Well, now, that is a thought! Perhaps I'll try reinstalling those that failed in that fashion. Just frustrating, trying to get this little computer up and functioning properly.
