Cannot change some footer options (Word 2000 SR-1)

My document defines "filename and path" in my footer to make sure I don't forget to put it on. Sometimes I cannot get access to the dropdown list of fields for Header and Footers, normally accessed through the Header/Footer toolbar.

Can anyone tell me why this is / how to cure it please?

    Many thanks in advance

Are you referring to the list of different AutoText options (some of which contain fields)? I think we will need some more information about what you mean by you cannot get access. If the list doesn't contain what you expect, it could be because your insertion point is in a paragraph that is not in the Header or Footer style. AutoText lists are sensitive to the style of the paragraph into which you are trying to insert them. On the other hand, if the button is grayed out or doesn't respond...

First, you want to get this out of your unless you want every document (including labels) to have this. Try constructing a template that has the features you want and using that template as the basis for your documents of that type. You'll be far happier.

Second, the list you are referring to is what is known as an "AutoTextList" field. These are style-dependent. The AutoText entries you are seeking are set for the header/footer styles. If your style is off, the AutoTextList will not show the entries.
