    Visual C++

    After several windows updates I now find I have many versions of Visual C++ on my 8.1 system.

    1 x 2005
    4 x 2008
    2 x 2010
    1 x 2012

    Can I safely uninstall earlier versions leaving only the latest, or is there a reason Microsoft leave them on?

    Its generally recommended that you keep the old versions. The programs that installed them may not run with the newer versions.
