    SSD Install

I have an SSD that I would like to install it in a particular way that I am sure has been done before - just not by me.

I currently have a C drive with Windows 7 Home and an E drive for data. At the moment, I have a few issues with Windows as I find that the CPU idles too high at around 30% instead of 5% like my laptop. It also used to be 5% but something has gone wrong. Also, IE is pretty much unusable for some reason as it increases cpu utilization into the 70+% range and lags badly. I started a thread on that about 2 weeks ago and based on the recommendations, I improved the situation a bit but I think it's time to start fresh.

What I would like to do is install the SSD with fresh new install of Windows and be able to do a dual boot to either the SSD or the current hard drive. I would keep it that way until the SSD is completely configured and eventually retire the current troubled Windows partition. In the meantime, I would use the current partition to do my work or whatever and initially boot into the SSD just to do configuration and re-install programs.

The PC came with a recovery partition, but I downloaded an iso of Windows 7 so I have that.

What I would like to do is to figure out how to install the SSD in such a way that I can install windows on it and dual boot. Ideally, I'd like to install the SSD into an enclosure where I can install windows but I'm not sure that is possible.

    So these are my questions:

    1. How should I physically install the SSD? Directly in the PC or can I begin the process in an enclosure? Ultimately, it will be installed in the PC.
    2. I could image my current C Drive to the SSD and then do a fresh Windows install or a repair over windows but then how do I dual boot? What about the remnants that will remain that I really would like to avoid as I prefer to reinstall from scratch?
    3. What program is recommended to extract my windows key because if I install a new version from an iso, I'll need it.

    Thx,

You cant do a clean install on the new drive and dual boot with the old one as you would have to contact MS to get the new installation activated and its likely that you would no longer be able to boot from the old one. You could install the new drive internally and clone the entire content of the old drive to it, including the recovery partition and then use that to restore to factory settings. As your present installation is OEM, the restore operation may not work but its worth trying.
To set up the dual boot, you would need EasyBCD.

As your current installation is flaky I'd fix it before doing anything else - I suspect some malware if the idle use is high. It's worth running Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and your AV. Then I'd take an image backup for good measure.

    cheers, Paul

I have run Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Essentials on it and they basically found nothing. I'll give AdwCleaner a try.

What I suspect is that it is somehow chrome-related as chrome runs a lot of processes. Problem is that I can't tell. The main user of cpu is "system" with little or no drill down feedback. I took a look using Process Explorer and it also didn't really tell me much.

If I could fix the "flaky" aspect, I would happily just clone the C partition to the SSD and be done with it.

Can you post a list of the processes using CPU at idle - via Task Manager. May be an obvious candidate.

    cheers, Paul

Thanks. This is very helpful. One question: Why couldn't I install windows from the iso and use the key that came with the machine?

So assuming I can do a restore will easybcd allow me to choose drive letters? I'm not clear as to what would happen when I clone the drive. Right after a clone, wouldn't I have 2 C drives?

Here is a jpeg of Task Manager. It's not everything but it's everything that has cpu cycles and a bunch of 0s below. Needless to say, I have a lot running but I actually use most of what you see regularly. I will also post Process explorer which has much more info.

This is a process explorer dump which may be a bit harder to follow but provides a lot more information.

Your process explorer log lists eighteen instances of Google Chrome ("chrome.exe"); that is excessive.

Also, the log lists 164 processes - when I checked in my Task Manager just now it listed 67 processes.

I'd be looking very closely at "System 25.96 416 K 16,160 K 4". It has small memory use but high CPU. Process Explorer will give you more detail.

    cheers, Paul

So assuming I can do a restore will easybcd allow me to choose drive letters? I'm not clear as to what would happen when I clone the drive. Right after a clone, wouldn't I have 2 C drives?
I already answered your first question - the clean install bit refers.
Easy BCD doesn't change drive letters. When you clone the hard drive, the second drive becomes D automatically (or whichever is the next spare letter). If you then swap over drives, the drive letters swap over also. I always check Disk Manager to make sure that the letters have been allocated as they should be and change them if required.

    Coochin,

I do have a number of Chrome extensions such as Chromecast, GMail checker, IE compatibility (because IE is unusable right now), Sticky Password, Google Drive, VPN, and probably 4 or 5 tabs open. I just disabled some of the addins but I doubt it will make much of a difference. I'll have to restart Chrome to see what it does.

    Paul,
In what I posted above from Process Explorer, almost everything below it is the detail of the 25.96% cpu usage.

Why do you have "25.96% cpu usage" when the system should be idle (00.0 CPU usage)?

When you are not doing anything with your computer the CPU usage should be 00.0, not 25.96%.

Something you have installed on your system is seriously affecting your system's performance. That problem will not go away until you do something positive to remedy it.

Look at what programs you need to run at Windows startup. Also consider turning your computer off (total power-off) when you don't intend to use it within the next eight-or-so hours. The often promoted "wisdom" that "it is best to leave your computer on" is really an urban myth that is illogical at best (would you leave your car's engine idling in the garage when you are not using it? - no, of course not).

At least run Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Cleanup to delete any junk files you have on your system that are probably slowing Windows down, especially anything to do with the Internet. Better (and easier) to install/run Cleanup! and run it weekly.

I had spotted that, but looking at your text file was more helpful. It may be SMSS.exe, seems to be a common issue. Try these links.
