    PATCH WATCH

Wrapping up a slow month of Windows/Office fixes

    By Susan Bradley

Though Microsoft gave us a small reprieve from patching in January, Adobe kept us busy updating Flash Player. A monthly Flash update is expected; multiple releases in one month are just confusing and worrisome.

Please explain how Flash for IE on Windows 8 would be updated automatically, as it's via Windows Update which you continually recommend should not be set to automatic:

Hey Bruce; I can only tell you that Win8 indeed installed the latest Flash update (and I didn't even notice that when it did). See the thread below.

    and, in particular:

... and you don't have updates set to be installed automatically? If so, I didn't realize Flash updates were treated that way.

    Bruce,

I have WU turned TOTALLY OFF on W 8.1.3 Pro and IE Flash updates never Automatically Install, I always have too.

However, TOTALLY OFF is the ONLY way I have found to control 99.99% of MS FORCED updates. If they REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to get something through MS ALWAYS CAN!!!

No, I don't trust MS and have been seriously considering some Linux Distro BUT, BUT would I be jumping out of the frying pan, into the fire. They certainly are having more and more problems TOOOOOOO!

    Best Regards,

    Crysta
