    Question about host file

So I am chasing another problem down when I came across this and I wanted some advice. My systems are Windows 7 64-bit, Home and Pro. In the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder there is the file called "hosts". Now on all my systems there is just the one file, but my system seems to have some extra ones. Here is what I have

hosts (last modified with today's date)
    hosts_bak_360 (last modified with 11-25-2014)
    hosts_bak_750 (last modified with 2-5-2015)

I am wondering if this is OK or if it OK to delete the 360 and 750 since those have older dates; leaving the most current one. I did open them using the Notepad, all look to have the same information and IP's. So just wondering. Thanks

    Lounge Rule:

    14. Avoid cross-posting into more than one forum or community

Cross-posting is the posting of the same or nearly the same message on more than one forum or community (for example, posting the same message in both the Database forum and the Spreadsheets forum or posting in the Windows Secrets Lounge and Microsoft Answers Community). To avoid this, choose the one forum or community that is the most appropriate and post your message there. Most members watch for new threads in several forums and communities.

We strongly discourage posting in more than one community. If you must post in more than one community please observe the tips in the "How to Post and When to Cross-Post" section at A message to cross posters. Cross posting to multiple communities without appropriate links will be grounds for temporary suspension of privileges. Repeated offenses will be grounds for a permanent ban.

You really need to find out why you have those bak files there, it's hopefully down to some security/adblocking software you have installed.

They're only likely to be taking up a few MB and are there as a backup - should some infection change the hosts, having them there makes it easy to revert to a safe version.

Are you using a Host editor/manager? maybe that is the problem. It seemed like that happened when I tried some of them years ago.

I wonder if it is "Unchecky" because when I opened the file I can see some entries there where Unchecky entered some information for protection.

@satrow - great point, could be used as backups. I'll just leave them alone, I just found it strange against my other systems only having one.

@Joe S - no I am not using one. But maybe it is tied to "Unchecky", but I will look in to some more; maybe go to their forums to see if this is something Unchecky does. Not sure

I also reviewed my Microsoft update logs and nothing close to the dates on the files. But I need to look at my programs as you mentioned.

Thank you for giving more insight and thank you for your time

Extraordinary. I've just got the entries inserted by Spybot, as previously posted 15,000+. Don't know why I would want any more... (scratches head)
