    Nas

What are the advantages of using a NAS unit, instead of connecting an external HDD to a modem via USB, to stream video to a smart TV?

The NAS is generally faster and can do more than the USB - it makes a good backup unit. You can also have RAID in your NAS to protect against disk failure.
    The downside is cost.

You can also use your PC as the streaming device and the USB disk for backup.

    cheers, Paul

Thanks for reply but already using ext HDD connected to modem and just wondered what the benefit would be of using a Synology NAS instead.

I think the External HDD is connected to the USB port in some Routers or maybe combination Router and Modem [I have the first but haven't seen the second yet]. As mentioned the speed of the Ethernet port may be faster but maybe not by much, always variables involved. I use a WDC NAS connected to an Ethernet port on my Gigabit Router [10/100/1000].

I suspect none as the USB disk seems to do what you want.
Are there other things you want to be able to do?

    cheers, Paul

No unless it can make a decent coffee and warm a bagel.

I can't get a decent coffee within 20 minutes of my place so I'd be up for one of those!

    cheers, Paul
