    Control document access (Word97SR2)

I'd posted this originally in the Word forum; the suggestion was that I post here in VB/VBA.

Is there any way to add minimal checkin/checkout capabilitto documents, possibly through VBA? My concern is with situations in which multiple users copy the same document
off a network, make changes to it at home, and then copy their updates back to the network, overwriting
each other's work. A full-blown document management system is in the works, but in the meantime, I am trying to find a combined manual/automated process for access control. We can add change tracking from within Word, but still have the problem of copies made from Explorer. We can't lock out off-network use completely, since several users work offsite/offnetwork and only return their work products at milestone date.

We'd be satisfied with a popup in Word that would say "John Doe checked out this document and has not checked it in. Are you sure that you want to work on it?"

Any ideas or solutions to consider?

fwiw, Office developers' edition includes SOurceSafe, which is very good for keeping documents and versions.

I am looking into starting sometype of document tracking system. The itmes are either in a cabinet or after so many months they are moved into boxes and moved into a storage building. Any ideas where I can look at something to build?
