    Running ScanDisk

Whenever I run ScanDisk and come back later
to check on its results, I am greeted by
    the following message:

"ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because
Windows or another program has been
writing to this drive. . . . Do you
want to continue receiving this message?"

How should I run ScanDisk so that it will
    run to completion without constantly
    stopping and restarting?

    Re: Running ScanDisk

The best way to overcome this problem is to restart your computer in "Safe Mode" ... then run Scan Disk or if needed Defrag. The problem is caused by apps running in the backgroung that is wiriting to the harddrive. When this happens, Windows detects it and restarts Scandisk.

If you feel comfortable doing so, you could also bring up the Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del) and delete the background apps you don't need at the time.

And make sure you shut off your screen saver along with ending tasks in the task manager. Set your screen saver to none in the display properties.

    Re: Running ScanDisk

Rebooting in Safe Mode is really not an option since I want my batch file
to run during the night. But in the morning when I expect ScanDisk to
have done its job, I am greeted with the usual error message. Supposedly
there are parameters that can be included when running ScanDisk from
a batch file. Does anyone have a complete list of these parameters???

    Re: Running ScanDisk

The better way to run Scandisk is to run it from DOS. Take your Startup floppy disk (or create it from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Startup Disk) and boot your computer from it. At command prompt, type
    SCANDISK C:
and you can leave it to run even overnight.

    Syntax is:
    For uncompressd drives:
    scandisk <drive> :

    For compressed drives:
    scandisk <drive> :dblspace.nnn
    scandisk <drive> :drvspace.nnn

dblspace.nnn or drvspace.nnn checks the specified unmounted Doublespace or Drivespace compressed volume file, where nnn is file name extension for the hidden host file.

    For more information, type
    scandisk /?

Syntax for Windows version of Scandisk (running from Windows only):

    scandiskw [drive:] [/A] [/N] [/P] [/?]

drive: - specifies one or more drives ti be checked
/A or /All - checks all local, nonremovable hard disk drives
/N or /NonInteractive - starts and closes Scandisk automatically. However, this switch does not prevent Scandisk from stopping to report errors found on the drive
/P or /Preview - runs Scandisk in Preview mode, where it reports and seems to correct errors that it finds, but does not actually write changes to the disk
