From what I was told, go to Start - Programs - Microsoft Office Tools - Microsoft Office Language Settings THEN uncheck the French dictionary.

In addition to what Leanne said, make sure your normal template (& all templates) have not been set to use the French language. Tools/Language/Set Language... Then make sure it is set for the language you want AND click the default button (or open the normal template directly and perform those steps.

Two other things you may wish to check are in the status bar setting at the foot of your Word window. You should see the language for which you are presently set there (viz. "English (U.S.)", "English (Australia)" or whatever). Double click on that and you should have a dialogue box open.

First select whatever language you prefer to use and select the Default button. This should change the setting for Normal.dot.

The second this is whether you want to have the "detect language automatically" setting enabled. If you also have the French keyboard setting enabled on your machine, you may find that in the middle of a document, Word decides that you're expressing something in French and - as a bonus - your keys start producing something that you hadn't quite intended.
