Count unique codes in a column (Excel 97)

I've got a column of codes for products. For instance, L879 would be a code. Sometimes the same code will get used twice in a column but I only want to count it once. I need the count of unique items in my list to know how many products I'm dealing with.

    Ctrl/Shift/Enter:
    =SUM(1/COUNTIF(range,range))
where range is the range of cells you want to count unique items.

Says there are too few arguments to complete. Wants a criteria for the COUNTIF function. Am I reading your formula wrong?

Maybe -- did you enter it with the range TWICE? Like
    =SUM(1/COUNTIF(A1:A100,A1:A100))
    and ctrl/shift/enter?
