Primary DNS Server gone. Need to promote secondary or replace primary

Primary DNS, three secondary DNS in multi-lcation network. Primary went down, never to return. Now cannot create new primary because TrustAnchors do not respond. What is good procedure to regain DNS nirvana? Servers are Win2008 or Win2012R2

Are we talking Active Directory here? We need more information on what network arrangement you have and exactly what DNS you had.

    cheers, Paul

    Paul,
Thank you for responding. This is an AD situation, and this box will become a DC/DNS, as the missing one was. Forest level 2008; one one forest. Approx 200 PCs. 3 other DNS/DC servers in three locations (box-to-box VPN) still exist. The missing DC has RID, FSMO (& PDC) roles, so that will also need to be straightened out.
Please ask if you need more info.

You cannot replace that DC until you seize the FSMO roles on another DC. I'm assuming the other DCs are also GCs, otherwise you will have trouble logging on.

    cheers, Paul
