Remove Appointment Items from public folder

Hi,
I am completely new to Exchange scripting although i have VB / VBA / VBScript / ASP / HTML / Javascript experience. I need to know what, where and how to start this solution ! <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

I have been asked to provide a way of automatically removing items from a folder when they are over a certain age (probably 14 days). I have the folder set up with scripting activated but am puzzled when the GUI offers me to edit the script and then saves it to my local folder as an asp document. How the dickens is this going to run unless i am logged in and running Outlook ? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Can anyone give some pointers regarding where i should start please? I think i have figured out the objects and properties that i need to interogate but have no idea where the script should go or how i get it there. Do i use something like interdev and then load/save it to the server somewhere?

exchange can delete items in the PF as they reach a certain age, why do you want to use a script?

which version of exchange are you using?

like i say, new to exchange etc. so please excuse the mis-guided approach.

This sounds great (not too mention a lot easier) that Exchange has the capability already.

i don;t have an exchange 5.5 server to get the exact steps, but look in the public folder properties from the exchange system manager. you need to look for "age limits" (can search help for that phrase) and set the age limit to the desired amount of time. You can set it globably and apply it to all folders and set specific folders to have different age limits.

This got me interested so i have swiped the Exchange Administrators Manual and have had a look, this seems to affect the whole Public Information Store. Is this a big thing or can you have more than one (ie lots) on one server? I have a feeling that the response will be : "Yeah, but we only want this folder affected. Thats why we need a script" !
Maybe we need to have a PIS with only one folder in it so that we can specify the criteria we need to?

Further reading and a little experimentation later i have identified the reason why i have been drawn into this.
The Exchange function deletes stuff according to creation date, this is find for a topical folder.
We however are aiming to keep a corporate diary and therefore there will be posts that relate to maybe next November that will be entered during December.
I need to remove the ones that have occurred more than 14 days ago, not those that were created more than 14 days ago.

to answer this question, you can set a different date for each folder if you want.

to answer the other question, you'll need a script to remove them based on occurance date. see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.cdolive.com>http://www.cdolive.com</A> for scripts. you'll run it as an event service. there is an addin for outlook called scripting service that lets you set up scripts to run - this may work for you. cdolive should have all the information you need.
