    Winword not Available

It may be sheer coincidence, but following the recent MS update delivery I am unable to open any Winword file or the application itself. I have Office 2000 on a computer running Win XP SP3 with all updates.

The following error message is received, which sadly is not very illuminating.

The usual security checks show that I am harbouring no unexpected visitors, and the doc files can happily be opened on other computers. Opening Winword in safe mode produces the same result. An immediate suspect was KB2965210, updated on 15 April - but this has since been uninstalled without solving the problem.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

It's been a long time since I've dealt with the issue you mention

Please create a System Restore point first

Run winword/exe /a to run Word without add-ins

If that doesn't work you can delete normal.dot
    Shut down
When you start back up the normal.dot is recreated

Edit: TECH TIP: Fixing your Normal.dot

Many thanks cmptrgy - renaming normal.dot as oldnormal.dot and opening a doc file was successful, and created a new version of normal.dot.
